Cecil Webb Field Trial Camping Trip - March 12th-14th

Yes, I went on Friday! In the torrential rainstorm with lightning and flooded roads. Why? I don't know. But, I did it. I thought the barn was enclosed, so I figured if Tonto was dry, I would stay, but the stalls were wet. I was wet, everything was wet! I went home.

I returned early Saturday morning. Jo Harder and her friend, Dee, came with their horses. Jo brought Ben. It was a great day to ride, sunny with a cool breeze. However, the trails were covered with water. We sloshed around for an hour or so and then decided to turn back to camp. Since I "just happened" to have a hammer, nails and a saw in my horse trailer, and Jo had new gloves for each of us, we gals proceeded to repair stalls! What fun! What team work!

The campground featured 44 covered stalls, a covered pavilion, and a lovely lodge with a huge fireplace, two bathrooms and a full kitchen. The porch went across the front of the lodge complete with rocking chairs! First class. This is where we ate lunch both days. Dee provided homemade pasta salad and sandwich fixings, including home grown tomatoes! Jo and Dee left later that afternoon. Apparently, everyone who said they "would" or "might" come had canceled out.

I stayed and camped Saturday night. It was a beautiful night. I had a roaring campfire and roasted hot dogs and marshmallows. Slept like a log. Arose at daybreak to stoke the fire to keep the morning chill off while I enjoyed fresh perked coffee.

Jo drove back in around 10 or so, and we ventured out on horseback along Boy Scout grade, which was dry for a couple of miles. Jo did the best she could under the circumstances to get some of the trails marked. It might take several more days for the trails to dry out. Jo hopes she can complete the task before the endurance ride, which is scheduled to take place next weekend.

Despite the horrid start, it turned out to be a relaxing, enjoyable two days at the "Field Trials" camp. Thank you, Caloosa Saddle Club, for reserving the camp for us.

It is my greatest wish that the club will sponsor a campout at this fabulous facility again next year! Y'all need to come out and see for yourselves what this camp has to offer.

Timber Trails - May 22nd

A few clouds moved in and a steady breeze kept Joanne Saffron, Aggie, and I comfortable as we traversed the trails on our trusty mounts.  I have spotted a few deer and a coyote in the area this week but we only came across one lonely hog that day.  The blossoming wildflowers lined much of the trails and the they were impressed by trails that were not only dry but often in the shade.  We enjoyed friendly chit-chat interspersed with the kind of comfortable silence you only experience out in the woods.  (It was obviously a slow day for the airport).  Afterwards, we dined in the air-conditioning back at the house after our horses had a rinse and some fresh water.

I guess I must clear up the misconception of where these trails are. They are not on 20/20 lands.  The 20/20 people have recently closed all access to their lands with barbed wire and declared that they are too sensitive for present or future horse use, which is a shame because it is the second largest preserve (Prairie Pines is the largest).  I call it Wild Turkey Strand to give it a location name but I suppose the Timber Trails area is more accurate.

PopAsh Preserve - February 27th

Even though Saturday started off rainy and cold, it turned out to be a nice night. Six riders braved the chill and a few sprinkles and saddled up for a moon ride at Popash. The moon hid from us for most of the ride, but our glow necklaces helped us see each other just fine.

As it always happens, the sky cleared on our way back to the trailers and it was perfectly clear as we set up for our campfire. Three others joined us for the campfire and we chowed down on hotdogs, smores, chips and dip, cookies, and brownies.

Cecil Webb - October 17th

Blustery weather greeted us Saturday morning, forecast didn't look promising and quite a few decided not to attend.  Only 4 die hards braved the weather and had the beautiful ride. We stalled our ride for awhile to let the mist move on and then started off in the overcast.  We were treated to deer, watched an eagle with his brunch trying to fly only to have him drop whatever because it was so heavy ( he couldn't gain any altitude), spider lilies, lots of flowers and then the spiders.  Jo Harder did her speed route, while Barb, myself and new member Joanne Saffron did the leisure route.  We all left together and ended up together so all was good. We enjoyed lunch by the trailers with the sun shining.
