Congratulations!

Lynda Rehse and her amazing Tonto won Florida Trail Rider of the Year for the 2nd straight year for the Spotted Saddle Horse Breeder's & Exhibitor's Assoc. !!!  She will receive her award at a ceremony held in Shelbyville, Tenn. on January 16th!

Alexis Conklin (Charlotte's granddaughter) - Alex and her Tennessee Walker "Who's Breathless" have achieved "Top 10" in the youth division for 2009. Alex has also been nominated by the "People to People" program to be a student ambassador and to travel to the British Isles for 19 days this coming summer. To raise money for the trip, there will be several benefit rides. The first will be in a fantastic area near Ocala on the last Saturday of this month where Charlotte and her family hope to have a great turnout. More details will be posted soon.

To All Horse Lovers

What is Florida Loves Horses? www.floridahorsecountry.org

This site is dedicated to the "Horse Country" specialty license plate program. The plate funds programs involved in the rehabilitation of Florida's at-risk youth.

Funding Shortage

State funding, as shown by independent studies, is 30-50% short of that required. Funds generated through the sale of this specialty plate will be distributed to programs providing educational and counseling services for Florida's at-risk boys and girls.  With many locations across the state (AMIkids Florida) a variety of approaches are used to capture the interest and imagination of the at risk youth.

Vet Only a Phone Call Away!
Valley Vet Supply magazine has a veterinarian on call Monday through Friday from 7 a.m.-8 p.m. and Saturdays 8 a.m.-5 p.m. 1-800-423-8211. Dr. Porter or Dr. Stava are based out of Nebraska so they are on a different time zone. Lynda Rehse recently spoke to him about a problem with her horse. She found him very helpful and patient with her questions.

Interested in Riding with a Drill Team?
The Just Horsin Around Drill Team is looking for new riders. We are a small group of riders who meet twice a week to practice drill maneuvers set to music. We have three competitions a year and have a lot of fun with our costumes. Riding in a drill team is great for your horse as they learn to ride in a group and will actually pick up the pattern quicker than you. If you are interested in learning more about what we do, please feel free to come watch one of our practices. We practice at the Lee County Posse Arena off Bayshore on Sunday afternoons. Please call Annette Detzel at 246-0308 or email her at jcdetzel@embarqmail.com if you have an interest.

Helmet Law For Horse Riders Under the Age of 16 Passes In Florida

SUMMARY ANALYSIS
HB 169 provides that a person under the age of 16 must wear a helmet when riding a horse on public lands. The requirement does not apply if the person is registered to compete or perform during a show or event, if the person is riding a horse on private property, or if the person is engaged in an agricultural related activity. The bill also prohibits parents from allowing children less than 16 years of age to ride horses on public property without a helmet. Similarly, the bill requires anyone renting a horse to be ridden by a person less than 16 years of age to verify the underage person has a helmet or provide the person with a helmet. A person violating this provision is guilty of a noncriminal violation, punishable by a $500 fine plus applicable fees and court costs. To the extent that parents of riders and persons who rent horses will be required to purchase safety helmets, there may be an indeterminate negative fiscal impact on the private sector (See Fiscal Comments section for additional details). This bill’s effective date is October 1, 2009
